Power the Aquatec SWP-4000 Directly off Solar

You can power the Aquatec directly off of DC power sources, battery, solar, and wind. The SWP-4000 pump draws 3.7 amps (111 watts) at 30 VDC.

The operating voltage range is 12 volts minimum to 30 volts maximum. For optimal performance, a solar panel/array of 180 watts or greater is recommended. On a partly bright day, a higher wattage solar panel/array would best assist the pump’s functioning. The solar panel(s) should be placed as close to the pump as possible, ideally, in an area that receives direct sunlight from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Calculate Minimum Solar Array for Aquatec SWP-4000

In certain solar water pumping applications, you might not need the max performance of 180-watts of solar. In order to calculate the minimum solar array size required for your specific application, you’ll need to know your head height and reference our chart below. Head height is the distance you need to pump the water.

Once you know your head height you can view the chart below to see what the amp draw will be. You’ll then need to do a small calculation to determine the minimum wattage needed for your solar array.
Use the formula Voltage X Amps X 1.25 (25%) = Watts.

For example, if your head height is 40 feet and you want to use a 24-volt solar panel. NOTE: solar panels have nominal voltage but the actual voltage is greater. For 24-volt panels use 30 volts, and for 12-volt panels use 18-volt in your calculations.

Our calculation would be 30 (volts) X 1.7 (AMPS) X 1.25 = 64-watts.

Keep in mind that this is in clear, sunny skies. If you frequently see clouds or shade you’ll want to increase this, even double it sometimes. More wattage just means you’ll be able to pump during less than optimal sun. Just don’t go over 30-volts for your solar array.

Aquatec SWP-4000 vs Shurflo 9300

Aquatec SWP-4000 is a direct competitor to Shurflo 9300. And if you’re looking for a great water pump that works directly off of solar, battery, or wind power, the Aquatec SWP-4000 is a great choice. It’s manufactured right here in the U.S. and is less expensive.

Aquatec also addresses an issue the Shurflo 9300 has with water leaking into the housing during the wire install. To combat this Aquatec is wiring the power cable directly from the manufacturer and adding anti-wicking to the wire splice to prevent any water ingress.

The Shurflo 9300 does have a leg up when it comes to pumping water. It has slightly larger water flow as compared to the Aquatec SWP-400, but if you have a well casing that is 6” or larger you can always go up to the Aquatec SWP-6000 for a greater flow rate. The GPM of the Shurflo 9300 at 20 feet head is 1.95 GPM as compared to the Aquatec’s 1.7 GPM . Towards the 230 foot lift the GPM are fairly equal at 1.36gpm ( Shurflo)  and 1.25gpm (Aquatec).
